Meet the ANZACs by Claire Saxby

Picture
Reviewed by Zanda F. MRPS

Meet the ANZAC’s is an inspiring story of only the strongest, youngest, tallest men that went to war. Some men were told that they were “too old” or “too young” or “too short” or “too skinny”.
For soldiers, being too old would mean they can’t catch up to the group. Being too young they would want them to have a longer life because they could die. If you’re weak you will fall over. If you don’t get any food they might die from starvation.
The Australia army changed the height requirement so maybe they realised that the height does not matter.
I would recommend is book to about 9 to 16 years old because there are some inappropriate illustrations and photographs.
I rate is book 9/10 because it is entertaining and I don’t really like reading those type of books.

At first glance we thought this book would be like Mr. Bunting’s other books like Liarbird or like The Wonderful World of Ants, but this book was very different.
There were stunning visuals and lots of attention to detail that we loved and brought the story to life.
You thought the story was only about a Mopoke… but guess again! But there is a wombat.
We loved this book and it left us laughing.
We recommend this book to people who like short sharp and funny picture books.

Alfred's War by Rachel Bin Sellah

Alfred’s War is a book about an Indigenous man who fought in World War 1 (The Great War).
Back when Alfred was alive the world was separated, and Indigenous people were not allowed to work in certain places. Alfred slept on park benches, under big trees, and he was always under the stars.
Alfred signed up for adventure but instead found despair. When he returned, he kept having flashbacks of his mates that passed in the war and the ringing of gunfire in his ears.
Alfred was one of the forgotten soldiers who served Australia but wasn’t acknowledged for his service.
Our favourite part is how Alfred is remembered and recognised for his efforts. There is a page with no words just a picture which made us realise how horrible people can be to each other and what it was like during the war.
We would recommend this book for grade 2 and up because younger students may not understand the moral of the story and war can be frighting to learn about.
We rate this book 8/10.

Pat grew up with his family of seven, his two parents, two brothers and two sisters and of course himself.
As Pat progressed up the ranks he suffered terrible injuries that could have ended his career, but instead he was courageous and that’s how he became so good.

In this book, Archie Crumbs has a tough life.
I knew this book was relating to young kids who have to live like this too. This book was definitely worth reading. Archie Crumbs doesn’t have anything he’s good at. This made it super heartbreaking as well to the fact he lives with his mum who’s divorced.
This blurb the story adds is absolutely amazing: “You’ve got nine wishes kid, no more no less” one of the characters says to Archie.

I hated how sad it was just realising this happens in real life. I didn’t really enjoy the emotional parts of this book but it ended heartwarming.
This story is definitely recommended to children at least 9-15 years old and people who like build ups and real life drama.
